The onset of winters also hails the arrival of traditional winter sweets. Out of the many Pakistani winter staples, the one that tops the list for most people is classic ‘Gajar Ka Halwa’.

Gajar ka halwa or gajrela is an Indian sweet dish made by cooking grated carrots with ghee, khoya, sugar and nuts. Flavored with cardamom powder, this creamy and rich sweet carrot pudding is worth all the time and effort.

It is advised not to have it during summers when the mercury hits 40 degrees all across Pakistan as the heaviness of dessert might make one feel sick. However, since winters are short and intense, they bring with them a craving for sugary tea and for buttery, sweet, slow-cooked halwa. We have sorted out three of the best spots in the metropolis where you can try delicious Gajar ka halwa.

Haji Asghar Rabri

Located near Nagan Chowrangi Flyover, Haji Asghar Rabri is famous for its sweet ‘Gajar ka Halwa’. Talking to M.M News, the staff member said, “It’s not an ordinary sweet dish, it’s a craze for the people of Karachi. We don’t purchase any items for this dessert. The desi ghee and khoya we use in our Halwa is our own.”

Their Gajjar Ka Halwa comes studded with dry-fruits and khoya and is just simply yum. Here the desert is sold at Rs 780 per kilogram.

Qasr-e-Sheereen

Situated at North Nazimabad, these guys need no introduction – they’ve been satiating Karachiites sweet tooth for years now and are one of the most popular people in the business.

Their Gajar Ka Halwa is next level. Perfectly garnished with lots of khoya and cashews. The price of desert they serve is a bit expensive as compared to others, it is sold at Rs 840 per kilogram.

Sohny Sweets & Bakers

Serving since 1986, Sohny Sweets and Bakers is a renowned sweet shop in Badar Commercial Karachi. The Halwa is slow-cooked in Desi Ghee for more than 8 hours and this is what imparts it a fabulous flavor. The Halwa is perfectly sweet and is garnished with dry-fruits.

The staff member informed that the Halwa is made using the family-preserved recipe, only in desi Ghee. Here the desert is sold at Rs 800 per kilogram.
