Technical fault caused major power breakdown in several parts of the country: NPCC

MM News Staff by MM News Staff
January 11, 2021

ISLAMABAD: The National Power Control Center (NPCC) has said that a technical fault in the system caused the major power breakdown in several parts of the country.

As per details, several parts of the country, including Islamabad, Karachi and Lahore, suffered a mass breakdown on late Saturday night.

Islamabad’s red zone among major cities of the country plunged into darkness after the power breakdown. Karachi’s 60 percent area was without electricity as the K-Eclectic system collapsed after the Jamshoro transmission line tripped. Despite several hours, the power division has failed to restore power in several parts of the country.

The Ministry of Energy spokesperson tweeted from the ministry’s official Twitter handle, said that according to initial reports, the Guddu power plant developed a fault at 11:41 pm on Saturday night.

“The fault caused the country’s high transmission lines to a trip, which in turn caused the system frequency to drop from 50 to 0 in less than a second. The drop in frequency caused power plants to shut down.”

The spokesperson added that the units of Tarbela and Warsak powerhouses had been fired up, adding that power was being restored to the transmission system.

“Phase-wise restoration of power will be initiated soon,” they said. “Once the initial frequency is met, the restoration work speeds up.”

Earlier, Federal Information Minister Shibli Faraz had said that the breakdown had been caused by a “technical fault” in the National Transmission and Despatch Company (NTDC) system. “System is being restored,” he tweeted.

Minister for Power Omar Ayub, in a statement on Twitter, said that the “frequency in the power distribution system suddenly dropped from 50 to 0 which caused the blackout”. “We are trying to ascertain what caused the drop in frequency.”

Ayub said that Tarbela “will be activated so a phase-wise restoration can be carried out”. He requested the nation to exercise patience.
