FUJAIRAH, UAE: Emergency response operations remain underway at the Fujairah Oil Industry Zone (FOIZ) following a suspected drone attack attributed to Iran on Monday, May 4, which triggered a significant fire and left three Indian nationals injured.
The strike marks a dramatic escalation in regional hostilities, disrupting operations at one of the world’s most critical energy hubs.
According to the Fujairah Media Office, a fire broke out at the complex—a vital facility for crude export, storage, and bunkering—following a drone attack originating from Iran. Emergency services were immediately dispatched to the site to contain the blaze.
The three Indian nationals injured in the attack were transported to a local hospital, where their conditions are reported to be moderate. No other immediate casualties have been confirmed.
The Fujairah strike occurred as part of a wider security challenge across the UAE. The Ministry of Defence confirmed a multi-layered defensive response throughout the evening, noting the following:
– Missile Interceptions: UAE air defense systems successfully engaged and intercepted three Iranian missiles over the country’s territorial waters. A fourth missile reportedly impacted the sea.
– Widespread Alerts: Authorities issued emergency mobile phone alerts to residents in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, warning of potential missile activity.
– Operational Disruption: The incident caused significant volatility in regional logistics, with some flight paths diverted to Oman as a precautionary measure.
It is pertinent to mention here that Fujairah sits on the Gulf of Oman, strategically positioned outside the Strait of Hormuz. It is essential to the UAE’s energy security, serving as the terminus for the Abu Dhabi Crude Oil Pipeline. By allowing the UAE to export crude directly to the Arabian Sea, the facility enables the country to bypass the Strait of Hormuz, which has been a primary focal point of the ongoing US-Israel-Iran conflict.
Background and Context
Monday’s attack is not an isolated event. Energy infrastructure in the emirate has faced repeated threats, including a similar drone-related incident on March 14, 2026, which led to temporary suspensions of loading operations.
UAE officials have vehemently condemned the strike, characterizing it as “unprovoked Iranian aggression” and a “direct threat to national security.”
While some reports indicate that Iran has denied premeditated targeting of the facility, the UAE has labeled the incident a “treacherous terrorist attack” and stated it reserves its “full and legitimate right” to respond.
