NEW YORK: A new research has stated that people who smoke weed or marijuana are at high risk for severe illness from COVID-19.
Experts suggested that smoking marijuana, even occasionally and in small amounts, can result in a higher risk to your lungs to have COVID-19 complications.
Pulmonologist Dr. Albert Rizzo, chief medical officer for the American Lung Association said, “What happens to your airways when you smoke cannabis is that it causes some degree of inflammation.” He asserted, “Now you have some airway inflammation and you get an infection on top of it. So, yes, your chance of getting more complications is there.”
Signs of lung damage from smoking even just a few cigarettes can show up in a matter of days. The experts have suggested to give up smoking or vaping for the time being to protect oneself against the virus as there is no cure or vaccine to treat the COVID-19.
The worldwide number of officially confirmed deaths from the novel coronavirus now stands at 154,278.
More than 2.2 million declared cases have been registered in 200 countries and territories since the epidemic first emerged in China in December. Of these cases, at least 571,359 are now considered recovered.
