KARACHI: Chief Minister of Sindh Murad Ali Shah today (Monday) directed the provincial health ministry to vaccinate 0.1 million people against COVID-19 every day as coronavirus infections surged across the province.
The directives came during a meeting of the coronavirus task force, which was chaired by Chief Minister Sindh. He also directed the authorities to increase the capacity of Expo Centre vaccination unit to vaccinate 50,000 every day.
During the meeting, CM Murad Ali Shah was briefed that the highest number of COVID-19 infections in Sindh during the third wave totaled 1,064 on April 29. The meeting was also informed that an almost complete lockdown was enforced on May 9 (Saturday).
Speaking on the occasion, the Chief Minister said considering cases reported between May 3 and 9, Karachi saw the second-highest percentage of positive cases – 9.48 percent.
Murad Ali Shah also praised the business community and the public for supporting the closure, saying that, “It was a difficult decision but we went ahead with it to protect the people.”
Earlier on May 7, CM Murad announced closing all shops, including grocery stores at 6pm amid the third wave of coronavirus. Restaurants will not be permitted to offer takeaways after sunset but they may continue home deliveries.
“We would further tighten enforcement of SOPs after Sunday and close Hawksbay, Sea View and other such recreational facilities for visitors,” he added, chairing a meeting of the coronavirus task force at the CM House.
