The Sindh Forensic DNA Laboratory, which has debunked Indian media claims, has now been recognized internationally.
The Sindh DNA Laboratory has become the country’s first forensic lab to receive ISO certification. Established in 2018 through a collaboration between the Sindh government and ICCBS at the University of Karachi, this lab has handled over 8,500 DNA cases related to various accidents, incidents, and crimes.
The lab has now been accredited by the Pakistan Scientific Accreditation Council, which grants the accreditation under the international ISO 17025 standard, following a third-party audit.
In a special conversation with media, the lab’s in-charge, Dr. Ishtiaq Ahmed, shared that the lab had received the ISO 17025 certification from the Pakistan Scientific Accreditation Council and that the certification was renewed after the annual performance audit.
He also acknowledged the contributions and support of Chief Police Surgeon Samia Syed and Director of the Identification Project, Amir Hassan, in the establishment of the lab.
It is noteworthy that this forensic lab’s investigation in the Daya Bheel murder case countered Indian media propaganda that portrayed Pakistan’s Hindu minority as unsafe. Daya Bheel, a woman from the Bheel community, was brutally murdered by a supposed sorcerer from the same community.
According to Dr. Ishtiaq Ahmed, the police had received information that the potential killer had kept the woman’s body at a specific location for several days. Soil samples taken from that site contained hair that matched the DNA of the woman’s body. Based on this evidence, the police were able to arrest the murderer.
This lab has also played a crucial role in resolving several high-profile cases, including the PIA crash, Noriabad traffic accident, Kaka Muna case, and others, all based on DNA analysis conducted by the lab.
