The reports of the death of renowned Islamic scholar Sheikh Muhammad Makki al-Hijazi, a Hanafi scholar of Pakistani origin residing in Makkah, Saudi Arabia, are false as he is alive.
Yesterday, it was reported that Sheikh Muhammad al-Hijazi had passed away in the holy city of Makkah; however, it has now been confirmed that he is alive.
Sheikh Muhammad al-Hijazi has dedicated his life to preaching near the Bab al-Umrah at the Haram, primarily to Urdu-speaking pilgrims. He is the senior-most Hanafi scholar and a prominent figure within the Sunni school of jurisprudence.
Born in 1935, Sheikh Makki al-Hijazi was raised in Makkah Mukarramah. His father, Sheikh Mohammad Khair Makki, was a distinguished scholar who taught the Quran and Sunnah for 40 years in Masjid Al-Haram, Makkah. Following in his father’s footsteps, Sheikh Makki al-Hijazi began teaching Tafsir ibn Kathir in Urdu and Tafsir al-Jalalayn and Sunan al-Tirmidhi in Arabic at Masjid Al-Haram in 1970.
Currently, a group of scholars is transcribing “Tafsir e Makki” from Sheikh Makki’s recorded lectures. Throughout his career, Sheikh Makki al-Hijazi gained prominence through his association with the Grand Mosque, one of Islam’s holiest sites. His numerous lectures and sermons attracted attendees from around the world.
Sheikh Makki al-Hijazi also traveled extensively for the cause of Islam, visiting North America, South America, Asia, Africa, Europe, and Oceania multiple times.
