ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister-elect Shehbaz Sharif has announced to hold an in-camera session of a parliamentary committee on the alleged “threatening letter” which his predecessor Imran Khan claimed was a plot to oust him from power.
In his maiden address to the house as the prime minister, Shehbaz Sharif thanked Al-Mighty Allah for countless blessings and “saving Pakistan” after the hectic efforts of the leaders of the joint opposition members.
He said it was the first time in Pakistan’s history that a no-confidence motion against a prime minister had been successful. “Good has prevailed over evil.” Shehbaz said it was a “big day” for the entire nation when a “selected” prime minister was sent packing in a constitutional manner.
He mentioned that the happiness of the people can be seen through the economic indicators. He mentioned that the rupee regained its value and closed at Rs182 per dollar today.
“Imran Khan was the person who said that when rupee declines against the US dollar then the prime minister of the country is corrupt, now he should see that the rupee has recovered around Rs8,” he said.
The newly-elected prime minister also thanked the Supreme Court for burying the doctrine of necessity for forever. “In the future, no one will be able to rely on it,” he said.
Sharif said the Opposition was discussing the no-confidence motion days before Imran Khan’s “threat letter controversy”. “They say that this letter came to them on March 7, but our decisions were made way before that, so the matter should be disclosed transparently before the public,” he said.
Shehbaz Sharif announced that the parliament’s security committee would be given a briefing on the “threat letter” to the members of the committee in presence of the armed forces personnel and bureaucrats — the Director-General Inter-Services Intelligence, foreign secretary, and the ambassador who wrote it.
“If there is a shred of evidence that we were backed by foreign conspirators… then I will not think for another second and resign from the office of the prime minister,” Shehbaz Sharif said, vowing to hold an in-camera session of the security committee at the earliest.
Earlier Shehbaz Sharif was elected as the 23rd prime minister of Pakistan after securing 174 votes as opposed to PTI’s candidate Shah Mahmood Qureshi, who received no votes after his party decided to boycott the polling process.
