In an important decision, the Federal Shariat Court (FSC) on Wednesday not only ruled that depriving women of their share in property on the basis of customs was un-Islamic.
The court also ordered the registration of criminal cases against those involved in such a practice.
A four-member bench, headed by Justice Iqbal Hameedur Rehman, gave the verdict on the petition filed by Fauzia Jalal Shah.
It was stated in the FSC decision that the court had been told there existed a custom in Bannu called ‘Chadar and Parchi’ under which women were not given their property rights.
But, as per the statement given by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government, such practices did not exist in the province, read the verdict.
