The second spell of the monsoon season has begun in Islamabad, bringing rainfall that has provided relief from humid weather and lowered temperatures in the federal capital.
Rain is also expected to spread across Islamabad and several cities in Punjab, with the Pakistan Meteorological Department forecasting showers accompanied by strong winds in many districts.
The weather department had earlier predicted light rain in Islamabad during the evening or night. Earlier in the day, the city experienced dry, partly cloudy conditions, leading to increased humidity before rainfall improved the weather.
According to the Punjab Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), the second monsoon spell, expected to continue from July 19 to July 24, could bring intense rainfall over short periods, increasing the risk of flooding in several parts of the province.
The PDMA has warned of possible urban flooding in major cities, including Lahore, Rawalpindi, Faisalabad, Gujranwala, Sialkot, and Multan, where heavy rain may cause water to accumulate on roads, streets, and in low-lying areas.
Authorities have also cautioned about the risk of flash flooding in Murree, Galiyat, and along Nullah Lai, and have directed all relevant departments to remain fully prepared for any emergency.
On the instructions of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, district administrations, commissioners, deputy commissioners, and other concerned agencies have been placed on high alert to ensure a timely response to any weather-related incidents.
The PDMA has advised residents to avoid unnecessary travel during severe weather and to remain indoors during thunderstorms and lightning. It has also urged parents to keep children away from low-lying areas, accumulated rainwater, electricity poles, and exposed power lines to reduce the risk of accidents.
Citizens have been asked to contact the PDMA helpline (1129) in case of any emergency. Authorities say all relevant agencies have been instructed to remain fully prepared to safeguard the public throughout the ongoing spell of monsoon rains.
