Saudi producer Abdul Aziz al-Muzaini has revealed that a Kingdom court has sentenced him to 13 years in prison and imposed a 13-year travel ban for charges of promoting terrorism and homosexuality through his Netflix show and old tweets.
In a video posted on YouTube and X, al-Muzaini addressed Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman, explaining that Saudi Arabia’s audiovisual commission had filed up to 30 charges against him in 2021, related to his popular animated Netflix series Masameer.
The video has since been deleted.
Despite consulting Saudi officials, he faced questioning and criticism for choosing Netflix over local networks. Among the charges against al-Muzaini was the use of certain phrases in his series, such as “May God curse you” and “You donkey,” which were considered criminal offenses. The most serious charge accused al-Muzaini and his company, Myrcott, of supporting terrorism and homosexuality through Masameer.
According to al-Muzaini, his accusers interpreted the first episode of his show, which mocks the Islamic State, as an implicit endorsement of the group.
