Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif conducted a thorough four-hour-long inquiry at Sahiwal Teaching Hospital following the tragic deaths of 11 children. During the inquiry, she ordered the suspension and arrest of the hospital’s Principal, Medical Superintendent (MS), Additional Medical Superintendent (AMS), and Admin Officer.
CM Maryam Nawaz personally reviewed all the inquiry reports and CCTV footage related to the incident. She took a strong stance against the negligence displayed by the hospital staff and reprimanded health department officials, emphasizing the critical need for accountability. She urged the officials to empathize with the grieving parents of the deceased children and to ensure that such negligence does not occur again.
Investigations into the incident revealed that the hospital’s fire extinguishers had expired in April and were not replaced despite multiple notifications.
The situation at Sahiwal Teaching Hospital remains tense as clashes erupted between doctors and police. The police arrested Principal Medical College Imran Hasan, MS Teaching Hospital Akhtar Mehboob, Dr. Umar, and Dr. Usman. However, they faced strong resistance from the hospital’s doctors. The confrontation escalated, leading the police to use batons against the protesting doctors before successfully arresting the four accused officials.
This incident has sparked widespread outrage and has highlighted the urgent need for systemic reforms in hospital management and emergency preparedness. The Chief Minister’s actions reflect a commitment to enforcing accountability and preventing future tragedies.
