Punjab University’s Rs 10bn scholarship plan: What it means for students

LAHORE: In a landmark decision aimed at easing the financial burden on students, Punjab University has announced a Rs 10 billion allocation for subsidies and scholarships for on-campus students during the financial year 2026-27. 

The decision was made during the 1761st meeting of the Punjab University Syndicate, chaired by Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Muhammad Ali.

– Budget Approval: The Syndicate recommended the approval of a Rs 20.87 billion budget for the upcoming fiscal year.

– Student Support: A significant portion of the budget, Rs 10 billion, has been earmarked specifically for subsidies and scholarships to support on-campus students.

– Additional Funding: The university has allocated Rs 341 million from its own resources to further bolster scholarship programs.

– Deficit Reduction: The budget deficit for the financial year 2025-26 was successfully reduced from Rs 2.2 billion to Rs 1.6 billion, demonstrating improved financial management.

The Syndicate emphasized the university’s commitment to increasing accessibility to higher education by expanding scholarships and subsidies. 

This initiative is expected to significantly alleviate the financial pressures faced by students and their families, ensuring that more students can pursue their academic goals without financial constraints.

Reports gathered from multiple sources suggest that with these measures, Punjab University reaffirms its dedication to fostering an inclusive and supportive academic environment. The university’s leadership expressed optimism that these financial adjustments will pave the way for a more equitable and accessible education system.
