In a move aimed at offering greater academic choices to students, the Punjab School Education Department has introduced three new groups for matriculation, alongside the traditional Science and Arts streams. The new options — Health Sciences, Agricultural Sciences, and Fashion Designing — will provide students with more tailored pathways for their academic and professional futures.
Starting from the academic session 2025-26, students entering 9th grade will be able to choose from these new groups, giving them the opportunity to specialize in fields that align with their interests and career aspirations. The department has also released detailed subject lists for these new groups, allowing students to make informed decisions based on their passions and strengths.
To ensure the availability of resources for the new groups, data on student preferences has been requested from Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) and District Education Officers (DEOs). The number of students enrolling in each group will determine the printing and distribution of textbooks, which will be customized accordingly.
This initiative is part of a broader effort to diversify the curriculum at the matric level and provide students with the skills needed to succeed in rapidly evolving sectors like health, agriculture, and fashion. The move comes under the guidance of the Chief Minister of Punjab, who has emphasized the importance of expanding educational opportunities to better prepare students for the future.
By offering specialized subjects at the matric level, the Punjab government aims to cater to a wider range of student interests, helping to shape a more versatile and skilled workforce in the province. The introduction of these new groups is expected to be a significant step toward modernizing education in Punjab and providing students with the tools they need to succeed in a dynamic world.
