The Punjab government has introduced an e-taxi service scheme aimed at combating rising air pollution and creating employment opportunities for the unemployed.
Under this initiative, electric taxis will be deployed, and drivers of online taxi services will be offered vehicles at attractive rates. These eco-friendly taxis are expected to reduce air pollution while providing economic benefits to the drivers.
Provincial Transport Minister Bilal Akbar Khan said that the program will focus on providing a significant portion of online taxis with electric vehicles (EVs), available to drivers through affordable packages, either via down payments or easy installment plans.
Khan stressed that the shift to electric taxis would not only help alleviate air pollution but also bring financial advantages for the drivers. “Our research shows that drivers can save up to 40% on fuel costs by switching to electric vehicles,” he said.
This initiative follows last month’s launch of a major project by the Punjab Transport Department, which aims to convert old petrol motorcycles into electric bikes.
This project is part of the government’s broader strategy to improve air quality, promote sustainable transport, and reduce carbon emissions in one of Pakistan’s most polluted regions.
