The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has issued guidelines for consumers regarding illegal and unregistered mobile phones, warning that devices with unverified IMEI numbers are blocked.
It is worth mentioning that a “patched phone” is an unregistered device (typically imported) whose original IMEI number has been illegally altered using software tools to match a PTA-approved phone. This allows the device to bypass official taxes and connect to local mobile networks.
PTA advised the public to purchase only approved and registered mobile phones and avoid buying duplicate or cloned devices.
Consumers have been urged to check the IMEI number printed on both the phone and its packaging before making a purchase.
According to the statement, users can verify their devices through the Device Verification System. PTA also warned against using phones with illegal or tampered IMEI numbers.
The authority further said that any illegal alteration of an IMEI number is a punishable offence. Individuals involved in changing IMEI numbers unlawfully may face up to three years in prison, a fine of up to Rs1 million, or both penalties.
