BADIN: Pakistan Peoples Party Parliamentarian (PPP-P) candidate Dada Mohammad Halepota on Thursday won the by-election on PS-70 (Matli) in Badin district.
Halepota secured 46,420 votes, while his opponent Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam (JUI-F) Maulana Gul Hassan came second by securing only 6,324 votes. The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) had supported the JUI-F candidate.
The voting started at 8:00 am on Thursday and continued till 5:00 pm without any break to elect a representative of the constituency in the provincial legislature. As many as 166,809 voters were registered in the constituency, including 75,222 women and 91,587 men. Of the 123 polling stations, consisting of 423 polling booths, 194 had been established for women and 229 for men.
The seat had fallen vacant after the death of Bashir Halepoto of the PPP on March 23. The late Halepoto had won the seat in the 2018 general election while in the 2013 polls he was elected from the Sindh Assembly’s constituency PS-55.
PPP chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari nominated his nephew Dada Mohammad Halepoto to contest the by-election.
There were ten other candidates taking part in the contest including the Grand Democratic Alliance, Tehreek-i-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP), and Masjlis Wahdat-i-Muslimeen (MWM).
Bilawal B congratulated the PPP’s workers and supporters after the party’s candidate emerged victorious in the PS-70 by-election. He said the party had wons 122 of 123 polling stations.
The election commission has earlier served a show-cause notice to JUI candidate Maulana Gul Hassan in the PS-70 Badin constituency over violation of the code of conduct.
