The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued a drought warning for Sindh after the region experienced a significant reduction in seasonal rainfall, receiving 52 percent less rainfall this year compared to the previous year.
According to the PDMA’s latest report, key districts including Naushero Feroze, Sukkur, Shaheed Benazirabad, and Jamshoro are expected to face severe drought conditions. The reduced rainfall has raised serious concerns about the impact on agriculture, water supply, and the livelihoods of local communities, particularly in rural areas where farming is heavily reliant on consistent seasonal rains.
The PDMA has urged all district administrations, particularly in Karachi, to take immediate alternate measures to mitigate the effects of the looming drought. These measures include preparing for water shortages, ensuring that water conservation strategies are put in place, and providing support to farmers who are facing difficulties due to the prolonged dry spell.
In addition, the PDMA has also alerted the district administrations of Dadu, Khairpur, and Tharparkar to begin precautionary steps, including rationing water supplies and securing emergency relief resources. The authority emphasized the importance of monitoring and addressing any early signs of crop failure and water scarcity in the affected areas.
With the drought situation becoming increasingly critical, the PDMA is coordinating efforts with local authorities, humanitarian organizations, and environmental experts to formulate a comprehensive response plan. The drought warning serves as a reminder of the growing challenges posed by climate change and unpredictable weather patterns, with several regions in Sindh facing devastating consequences in terms of food security and water availability.
Residents of these vulnerable areas have been urged to remain alert and prepared for possible shortages, while also ensuring that they use water resources efficiently to avoid exacerbating the situation. The PDMA continues to monitor the situation closely and is working on deploying relief teams as needed to provide immediate assistance to affected communities.
As the drought threat looms, the PDMA is calling for a collective effort to prevent a full-scale crisis in Sindh, while also focusing on long-term strategies to combat the impact of changing climatic conditions in the region.
