The government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has decided to name the Journalism Department of Peshawar University after the slain journalist Arshad Sharif.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Minister for Higher Education Meena Khan Afridi has said that Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur has directed to name the Journalism Department of Peshawar University after Arshad Sharif.
Afridi said that work will start soon on the Chief Minister’s directive, and the name of the journalism department will be changed by implementing the Chief Minister’s instructions.
Afridi further said that the role of journalists in restoring true democracy in Pakistan is undeniable.
Arshad Sharif (1973–2022) was a prominent Pakistani investigative journalist and news anchor. Known for his work on ARY News and Dunya TV, he hosted programs like Power Play and Kyun? focusing on defense, foreign affairs, and political corruption. Awarded the Pride of Performance in 2019, he gained international recognition for exposing sensitive issues.
On 23 October 2022, Sharif was fatally shot by Kenyan police at a roadblock near Nairobi. Authorities claimed it was a “mistaken identity” case involving a stolen vehicle.
