A Bangladeshi court has ordered the seizure of cricketer Shakib Al Hasan’s assets, as reported by international media on Monday.
According to a report by Dawn News, citing foreign news agency AFP, the Bangladeshi court’s ruling has added to the troubles of the sports star, who was loyal to former ruler Sheikh Hasina.
Shakib Al Hasan is a former legislator from the party of the country’s former autocratic ruler, Sheikh Hasina, who was removed during the student-led uprising last year and fled to neighboring India by helicopter.
Due to his ties with Sheikh Hasina, Shakib Al Hasan has become a target of public anger and is among dozens of individuals under investigation for murder charges following a deadly police crackdown on protesters during the revolt.
Although no formal charges have been filed against the cricketer regarding these allegations, he is currently facing a case over alleged fraud involving bounced checks worth more than $300,000.
A magistrate in the capital Dhaka issued an order to seize his property on Monday, while a court had earlier issued a warrant for his arrest in January.
When Sheikh Hasina’s government was overthrown, Shakib Al Hasan was playing in a domestic T20 cricket tournament in Canada and has not returned to Bangladesh since then. The left-arm all-rounder has played 71 Tests, 247 One Day Internationals (ODIs), and 129 T20s for Bangladesh, taking a total of 712 wickets.
