A Pakistani-Canadian businessman, who participated in protests following the death of Khalistani activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, was set on fire by an unidentified man in Surrey, British Columbia.
Rahat Rao was attacked by a man approximately 24 or 25 years old on Friday. He was hospitalized and is in critical condition.
Rao was actively engaged in Canadian society and took part in numerous protests after Nijjar’s death in June last year.
Nijjar was shot and killed outside a gurdwara in Surrey. The Indian government had labeled him and forty others as terrorists.
In September 2022, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau suggested that Nijjar’s murder might have been orchestrated by Indian government operatives, sparking a diplomatic dispute between India and Canada. India strongly denied the allegations, calling them “absurd” and “motivated.”
