Pakistan, in recent years, has seen an alarming increase in the number of drug addicts across the country.
The number of people using tobacco, hashish, heroin, ice and other drugs including injections is increasing at an alarming rate in Pakistan.
According to a report, in 2007, this number was 90,000, which has now increased to 500,000. Such patients are treated in a modern way at the Punjab Institute of Mental Health Sciences.
Psychologist Dr. Saqib Bajwa said that the rulers can save the young generation from this scourge by controlling the drug manufacturers and suppliers.
Professor of Psychiatry Dr. Ali Burhan has said that the young generation is attracted to drugs to get out of problems and mental stress and gets stuck in this quagmire.
Meanwhile, a rapid increase in use of ecstasy pills and ice (crystal meth) by majority of youth has alarmed parents, health professionals and civil society activists in Khyber tribal district.
Findings gathered by this scribe reveal a disturbing trend among local youth: the widespread use of ecstasy pills and ice. These substances have alarmingly become commonplace at social events—such as weddings, engagements, and other celebrations—largely due to their easy accessibility across Khyber.
In this regard, medical experts say that the government and society should play their role in reducing the horror and spread of addiction.
