People worldwide are in for a rare spectacle on December 30, 2024, as the “Black Moon” graces the skies—a unique astronomical event occurring when two new moons fall within the same calendar month.
This phenomenon will create some of the darkest skies of the year, offering an excellent opportunity for stargazing and observing distant planets. The Black Moon will peak at 5:27 p.m. ET on December 30, 2024, and will be visible across the Americas that evening.
In Europe, Africa, and Asia, the celestial event will unfold on December 31, 2024. In Pakistan, the Black Moon can be observed around 3:27 a.m. on December 31, while in India, it will appear approximately at 3:57 a.m. the same night.
What is a ‘Black Moon’?

Much like the “Blue Moon,” which refers to two full moons in a month, the Black Moon is a rare occurrence in the lunar cycle. During this phase, the moon is positioned between the Earth and the Sun, with its illuminated side hidden, rendering it invisible from Earth.
