Pakistan has taken a key step toward modernizing air travel by approving, in principle, the use of internet and mobile services on airplanes.
The move is expected to enhance passenger connectivity, with the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) drafting a licensing framework for in-flight telecom and satellite services.
According to details, stakeholders can submit their proposals and recommendations to PTA until May 31. Under the proposed license, airlines will be allowed to provide telecommunication satellite services during flights, enabling passengers to access internet and mobile connectivity onboard.
Mobile services will be permitted only above an altitude of 3,000 meters. The license will be valid for 10 years, with an option for renewal. Operators must obtain a formal certificate from PTA before launching services and are required to begin operations within 12 months.
The license mandates that data storage and processing must take place within Pakistan, and satellite operators must be registered with relevant authorities. International bandwidth must be obtained from locally licensed providers.
Strict conditions have also been included to ensure user data privacy and security. Use of unapproved telecom equipment will be prohibited, and service quality must meet international standards.
