KARACHI: The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) on Thursday confirmed receipt of US$2 billion from the Ministry of Finance, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, with value date April 15, 2026, bolstering the country’s foreign exchange reserves at a time of pressing external financing needs.
The deposit comes against the backdrop of Prime Minister’s recent visit to Riyadh, where he briefed Saudi leadership on Pakistan’s efforts to mediate between regional rivals. Officials said the Kingdom reiterated pledges of continued financial support, linking economic assistance with Islamabad’s diplomatic role in easing tensions across the Middle East.
During the visit, the Prime Minister underscored Pakistan’s “unique position as a trusted interlocutor,” citing ongoing backchannel contacts. The White House, in a rare public acknowledgment, praised Pakistan as “the only mediator acceptable to both sides,” noting Islamabad’s balancing act between Gulf capitals and Tehran.
Diplomatic sources added that Pakistan’s outreach coincided with Field Marshal-level consultations in Tehran, where senior Iranian officials engaged in discussions on de-escalation. Observers say the timing of the Saudi deposit reflects Riyadh’s confidence in Islamabad’s mediation, while also providing critical relief to Pakistan’s economy.
Analysts believe the inflow will temporarily ease pressure on the rupee and help meet upcoming external debt obligations. However, they caution that sustainable stability hinges on structural reforms and continued external support.
