In response to a backlog in passport clearance exacerbated by a shortage of lamination paper, Pakistan has announced a fee increase for passport issuance. The fee hike, implemented by the Directorate General of Immigration and Passports (DGI&P), aims to address the challenges faced by the department in clearing the backlog and improving passport services and security features.
The slow issuance of passports has led to significant delays, with waiting times stretching to several months. Despite efforts to generate revenue, the department has struggled to keep up with the backlog, resulting in piles of pending passports. Currently, passports are only being issued to those willing to pay urgent and fast-track fees.
Under the new fee structure, the cost of a 36-page passport valid for five years has been raised to Rs 12,500, while the fee for a 10-year passport has been increased to Rs 16,200. For individuals opting for a 72-page travel document with a five-year validity period, the fee stands at Rs 18,500, and for a 10-year validity period, it is priced at Rs 25,200. Additionally, a 100-page passport with a 10-year validity period will now cost Rs 32,000.
The fee increase is part of a series of reforms initiated by the DGI&P to streamline passport services and enhance security features. However, it remains to be seen how this adjustment will impact the backlog and waiting times for passport issuance in Pakistan.
