Pakistan’s national hockey team has announced boycott of further participation in the upcoming World Cup qualifying, accusing officials of mismanagement and poor treatment during their recent tour of Australia.
The team returned home after losing all four matches in the second phase of the Pro Hockey League in Australia. Following the tour, the team management informed the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) about the alleged mistreatment faced by players.
Head coach Tahir Zaman and other officials met PHF President Tariq Bugti, reportedly describing the accommodation and food arrangements as satisfactory. However, the management said that hotel bookings were cancelled due to delayed payments. Reports say President Bugti has summoned the players for a meeting.
Captain Imad Shakeel Butt strongly criticized the current administration, declaring that the team would not participate in the upcoming World Cup qualifying round under existing management.
He alleged that players were denied proper lodging and quality meals, sometimes forced to cook and wash their own clothes, and left waiting on the roadside for 16 hours without payment of dues.
The captain urged the Prime Minister and Army Chief to take immediate notice. Meanwhile, the management has avoided giving a clear stance.
