Norwegian footballer Ole Saeter, who can represent Pakistan because of his mother’s background, has turned down a big offer from Israeli club Maccabi Haifa for moral reasons.
He was offered about $910,000 (around PKR 264.3 million) but said he couldn’t play for a country he believes is responsible for violence against children and the elderly. Saeter stated, “Even if I were offered $500 million, I would not join an Israeli club,” highlighting that his values are more important than money.
Saeter has also posted pictures of himself wearing a Pakistan football team jersey on social media, showing his connection to the country.
Recently, FIFA delayed its decision on a Palestinian request to suspend Israel from international soccer due to the situation in Gaza. FIFA will now consider this in October, after ordering a legal review of the Palestinian Football Association’s claims against the Israel Football Association.
The Palestinian association accuses the Israeli association of violating international law, discriminating against Arab players, and having clubs in Palestinian territories. The Israeli association denies these claims. The Palestinian group has also reported that at least 92 Palestinian players have died in the conflict, with football facilities destroyed and leagues suspended.
They are asking FIFA to impose sanctions on Israeli teams, including the national team and clubs.
