Spanish actor Javier Bardem used his moment on stage to call for peace and Palestinian freedom while presenting an award at the Academy Awards in Los Angeles.

While presenting the Oscar for Best International Feature Film on Sunday, Bardem opened his remarks by declaring “No to war” and “Free Palestine.” The actor also wore a pin reading “No a la guerra”, Spanish for “No to war”, along with another badge expressing support for Palestine.

Bardem has long been outspoken about the conflict in Gaza. In previous statements, he criticized Israeli military actions and accused the Israeli government of committing “crimes against humanity” in the besieged territory, urging the international community to hold those responsible accountable.

As Hollywood’s awards season concluded with the Oscars, activists noted a renewed wave of political expression among artists. Jess Morales Rocketto, executive director of the Latino advocacy group Maremoto, described it as a “return to form” for celebrity activism.
