A catastrophic midair collision involving an American Airlines regional passenger aircraft and a US Army Black Hawk helicopter near
Reagan Washington National Airport has resulted in the tragic loss of over 60 lives, with no survivors anticipated.
Authorities have reported the recovery of 28 bodies thus far, comprising 27 from the aircraft and one from the helicopter.
The incident transpired at approximately 8:48 p.m. on Thursday as the American Airlines regional flight, designated as American Eagle Flight 5342, was nearing the airport after departing from Wichita, Kansas.
The flight, a CRJ-700 operated by PSA Airlines, was transporting 60 passengers along with four crew members, which included ice skaters and their coaches.
The US Army Black Hawk helicopter, on a training flight, was carrying three soldiers. Both aircraft were reportedly following normal flight patterns at the time of the collision, which took place under clear conditions, according to US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy.
