KARACHI: The government of Sindh has implemented a new policy that imposes fees on industries and Karachi residents for the use and distribution of boring water in the city.
The new regulation requires water to be metered, as stated in a gazette notification. The extraction, use, and sale of groundwater will be monitored by the city government.
The notification applies to the Karachi Division and surrounding areas. It includes corporations, commercial establishments, hotels, educational institutions, residential complexes, apartments, flats, and high-rise buildings.
Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab announced that the installation of digital meters will begin on August 1. He also advised against installing water meters in industrial areas.
Mayor Wahab highlighted that Karachi receives 550 million gallons of water daily, costing 4.5 billion rupees, but the Water Board only receives 1.5 billion rupees from billing. Additionally, he mentioned that the city operates 5,500 water tankers, with 3,200 registered to curb water theft, and an additional 2,300 tankers will be registered soon.
