Federal Information Minister Attaullah Tarar accused Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) of politicizing the issue of military courts for their own agenda.
Speaking to the media on Wednesday, as reported by ARY News, Tarar asserted that military court proceedings do not violate the right to a fair trial. He emphasized that defendants have access to legal representation, family visits, and two opportunities to appeal, first in the military court and then in the relevant high court.
He further stated that international laws were adhered to during the trials of those involved in the May 9 incidents. Tarar denied any human rights violations and affirmed that all accused individuals would be punished according to the law. He criticized PTI for creating a false anti-state narrative about military courts, which, he said, operate lawfully under an Act of Parliament and the Supreme Court’s directives.
Tarar explained that military courts handle cases involving attacks on defense installations, such as those at Corps Commander House, Mardan, and Bala Hisar Fort. He argued that it is the defense establishment’s duty to arrest perpetrators of such attacks, just as the railway police handle crimes on railways by filing FIRs.
Drawing comparisons, Tarar noted that cases involving drugs are tried in Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF) courts, terrorism cases in Anti-Terrorism Courts (ATCs), and crimes on railway facilities in railway courts. Similarly, attacks on military installations are prosecuted in military courts.
