New era for Pakistan’s domestic aviation as South Air touches down in Karachi

KARACHI: A new chapter in Pakistan’s domestic aviation history began on Saturday as South Air, the country’s latest private carrier, welcomed its first aircraft at Jinnah International Airport.

The ATR 72 turboprop, painted in the airline’s distinctive livery, received a traditional water salute from the airport fire brigade—a ceremonial mark of honor reserved for significant aviation milestones.

The arrival, which took place in the early hours of the day, signals the final phase of preparations for the airline’s commercial launch, slated for the first week of June 2026.

Backed by the Multan-based SOS Group, South Air has positioned itself as a “next-generation” carrier with a distinct focus on bridging the connectivity gap in Pakistan’s underserved regions. Unlike traditional carriers that prioritize major metropolitan hubs, South Air aims to serve remote and tourism-heavy destinations, including Gwadar, Turbat, Panjgur, and the northern areas of Gilgit, Skardu, and Chitral.

The airline’s strategic vision centers on making air travel affordable and accessible to communities in South Punjab, interior Sindh, and Balochistan, areas that have long suffered from limited air links. By deploying ATR 72 aircraft—known for their ability to operate on shorter runways—South Air intends to unlock economic potential and boost tourism in these regions. The airline’s inaugural commercial route is expected to connect Karachi to Multan, a symbolic nod to the conglomerate’s roots.

The launch of South Air comes at a critical time for Pakistan’s aviation sector, which has grappled with challenges ranging from the national carrier’s operational struggles to a lack of competition on domestic routes. Industry analysts view the entry of new private players like South Air as a vital catalyst for lowering fares, improving service standards, and expanding the national air network. With its Air Operator Certificate (AOC) already secured and a recruitment drive well underway, the airline is poised to challenge the status quo and offer travelers a fresh, reliable alternative.

As the aircraft taxied to its parking stand, the scene marked more than just a delivery; it represented a concrete step toward a more connected Pakistan. For aviation enthusiasts and frequent travelers alike, the arrival of South Air promises a future where remote destinations are just a flight away, redefining the map of domestic air travel.
