Netflix show ‘A Suitable Boy’ has got legal notice from Shia Personal Board, after a taziya scene from the series has hurt the sentiments of the Shia community in India.
All India Shia Personal Law Board (AISPLB) sent a legal notice to the filmmaker Mira Nair, Netflix and show’s producer. The board had accused that, the makers have portrayed a Tazia (replica of Imam Hussain’s mausoleum) in a disrespectful manner.
The PTI board’s notice reads, “At 43:30 minutes you have desecrated a ‘Tazia’ when you have shown it falling to the ground. This particular scene has not just hurt the sentiments of lakhs of people (belonging to different religions, faiths, beliefs and walks of life) who consider a ‘Tazia’ to be the most sacrosanct and keep it at the highest pedestal, but has also invoked religious fervor of sorts amongst them.”

It further added, “It is needless to say that any act of yours which is contrary to what has been instructed above would invite initiation of criminal proceedings against you inter-alia under section 295 A Indian Penal Code, besides initiating further suitable action against you, at your risks, costs and consequences throughout.”
Moreover, the board demands an apology from the makers publically and to remove that particular scene from the show. The drama series is based on Vikram Seth’s 1993 novel. In which three very different men attempt to win the heart of passionate literature student Lata Mehra, who herself has torn apart between family duty and the promises of romance.
