ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) supremo Nawaz Sharif will not be travelling to Pakistan from London to attend the funeral of his mother.
Speaking to a private news outlet, PML-N leader Uzma Bukhari said that Nawaz Sharif is not fit to travel and will not be travelling to Pakistan for the funeral of his mother Shamim Aktar who passed away in London.
“Mian Nawaz Sharif will not come to Pakistan because he is suffering from kidney problems and is in hospital. Doctors say he is not fit to travel,” she said.
She said the funeral prayer will be offered in London and will be attended by Nawaz Sharif and other party members. The body will then be sent to Lahore and funeral prayer will be offered at Jati Umrah. She will be buried at the family’s ancestral graveyard.
Bukhari also said PML-N would approach court for the release of Shehbaz Sharif and Hamza Sharif on bail so they can attend the funeral prayers in Lahore. Shehbaz Sharif has been in jail on judicial remand since October.
Earlier, upon receiving news of the death, a tearful Maryam Nawaz left the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) rally in Peshawar after asking the huge crowds gathered there to pray for her grandmother’s soul.
The funeral prayers of Shamim Akhtar would be offered at Central Mosque Regent Park Street in London. The body would then be shifted to a morgue and will be brought to Lahore.
PML-N leader Ataullah Tarar said that the funeral would be offered in at Sharif Medical Centre in Raiwand and it could take two to three days to bring her body back.
He said that the request for release of Shehbaz Sharif and Hamza Shehbaz on parole would be submitted as soon as the body arrives in Pakistan.
Prime Minister Imran Khan has expressed his condolences on her demise. “My condolences and prayers go to the Sharif family on the passing of Mian Nawaz and Mian Shahbaz Sharif’s mother,” he said.
Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa expressed his grief and heartfelt condolences on the sad demise of the mother Nawaz Sharif and Shehbaz Sharif.
Governor Punjab Chaudhry Sarwar, Chief Minister Punjab Usman Buzdar, former president Asif Ali Zardari, Pakistan People’s Party chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardar, National Assembly Speaker Asad Qaiser and Deputy Speaker Qasim Khan Suri and other political leaders have expressed grief her demise and prayed for the eternal peace of the departed soul.
