ISLAMABAD: Police have arrested the brother-in-law of three-year-old Sakina on suspicion of her murder in the federal capital. According to police, the girl’s body was recovered from a rainwater drain near Jhangi Syedan following information provided by the suspect.
Police said Sakina went missing on September 22 while playing outside her home. After the family failed to locate her, they contacted the police, who formed seven teams to search for the child.
According to Industrial Area Superintendent of Police Dr Ayaz Hussain, CCTV footage from a nearby area showed the girl walking with a young man who was later identified as her brother-in-law, Kashif. Police said the suspect failed to provide satisfactory answers during questioning and later allegedly confessed to sexually assaulting and strangling the child to death.
Police said they recovered several pieces of evidence at the suspect’s direction, including the clothes he was allegedly wearing at the time of the incident. DNA samples and other forensic evidence from the suspect and the deceased girl have also been sent for analysis.
The suspect has been remanded in police custody for five days for further investigation, while murder charges have been added to the case.
Sakina’s maternal grandfather described her as the youngest and much-loved member of the family and appealed to the authorities to ensure justice.
