ISLAMABAD: The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) interrogated PTI Chairman Imran Khan in Attock Jail in a case related to a diplomatic cable that has reportedly gone missing from his possession.
The FIA has expedited proceedings against the former prime minister for allegedly making public a confidential diplomatic cable and keeping it in his possession.
The JIT grilled Khan in Attock jail in the office of the deputy superintendent jail. FIA’s Counter-Terrorism Wing registered a case in connection with the “missing cypher” from the official record of the Prime Minister’s Office and indicted him in the case.
Last month, on July 25, Imran Khan appeared before a joint investigation team formed to investigate the cypher case and was quizzed for nearly two hours in the case.
The Lahore High Court (LHC) withdrew a stay order against the call-up notice to Khan by the FIA into the audio leak involving the US diplomatic cable.
Imran Khan has also been under increased scrutiny following the publication of a purported copy of the secret cable by a US outlet and the statement made by his former principal secretary Azam Khan.
According to reports, a case was still being drawn up against the PTI chief. Former interior minister Rana Sanaullah Imran Khan could be tried under the Official Secrets Act if the copy of the cypher was lost.
The FIA was initially investigating Khan for revealing the contents of a confidential diplomatic cable and keeping it in his possession.
After the disclosure of former principal secretary Azam Khan that the cYpher went missing from the custody of Imran Khan, the investigation agency also started looking into this aspect.
Azam Khan stated that handed over the cypher to the former prime minister who later told him he had misplaced it and did not return it despite repeated requests. Imran Khan has denied the claims and said the cypher lies securely in the Foreign Office.
