The milk retailers’ and wholesalers’ associations warned that if the Karachi administration did not immediately issue a notification regarding new prices, the price of milk would be fixed at Rs300 per liter from Oct 11.
According to details, tensions between dairy farmers and Karachi’s municipal administration have escalated. Dairy farmers and wholesalers have threatened to unilaterally set the price of milk at Rs300 per liter starting October 11, while the administration insists that milk quality must be assessed before any price hike is approved.
Organizations representing milk retailers and wholesalers have warned that if the administration does not immediately issue a new price notification, they will enforce the Rs300/liter rate from October 11.
A recent meeting was attended by representatives of dairy farmers, wholesalers, retailers, consumers, and relevant departments. During the meeting, Karachi Commissioner Syed Hasan Naqvi decided that a new milk price would only be determined after evaluating its quality. To carry out this assessment, a committee has been formed comprising officials from concerned departments and consumer representatives.
The committee has been instructed to collect 50 milk samples from various parts of the city, covering the farmer, retailer, and wholesaler levels. All samples will be tested by PSQCA, and a report is expected within seven days.
