NEW DELHI: India broke all previous heat records, recorded a temperature of 52.9 degrees Celsius, sweltering north and western parts of India, students fainted in schools, and drinking water taps ran dry.
A heatwave alert has been in place for large parts of India since last week, but the temperature in Mangeshpur, a densely populated corner of Delhi, crossed 50C on Wednesday, the Meteorological Department said.
The temperature in the Indian capital has been above 45 degrees Celsius over the years but never above 52.9 degrees Celsius.
In northwest Delhi’s Mangeshpur, streets were deserted and most shops were closed as people stayed indoors to escape the sweltering heat, while residents in Narila got free cooling after temperatures soared to 49.9 degrees Celsius on Tuesday. Drinks distributed.
India Meteorological Department says that they are checking the data and sensors to see the temperature of Mangeshpur.
Citizens say that it is so hot in Delhi that students are fainting, some are getting sick, and some are facing water shortages. Students are facing a lot of problems this summer.
