Amid the disappointing performance of the Pakistan national cricket team in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024, held in the USA and West Indies, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Muhsin Naqvi has announced a major overhaul in the team. This has sparked speculation about which players will stay and who will be dropped.
According to reliable sources, several players, including senior manager and selection committee member Wahab Riaz, are likely to be axed. Players such as Mohammad Amir, Imad Wasim, Iftikhar Ahmed, Azam Khan, and Usman Khan are expected to face challenges in retaining their spots. Additionally, Wahab Riaz’s position is in jeopardy, with calls for changes in the board’s selection committee.
Sources have disclosed that a trio of players has been pressuring PCB officials for substantial increases in central contract remuneration under the influence of their manager, resorting to blackmail.
The anticipated changes in the team will be based on reports from Captain Babar Azam, head coach Gary Kirsten, Senior Manager Riaz, and Assistant Coach Azhar Mahmood. Additionally, the report from former director Mohammad Hafeez, which accused players of prioritizing money over performance, will be reviewed.
Following the disappointing performance in the T20 World Cup 2024 and preceding series, players and selection committee members are expected to be relieved of their duties.
These developments come after PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi expressed dismay following the loss to India, emphasizing the necessity for a “major surgery” in the team. Speaking to journalists after the match at Nassau County International Cricket Stadium, Naqvi stressed that the team’s poor performance was unacceptable.
