LAHORE: The Punjab government has earmarked Rs. 4 billion in its 2025-26 provincial budget for a comprehensive solar panel scheme aimed at promoting renewable energy and reducing reliance on conventional power sources.
The initiative is designed to provide affordable, clean energy solutions to local communities, ease the burden of rising electricity costs, and strengthen Punjab’s long-term energy security.
Alongside the solar project, the budget introduces several other significant allocations across key sectors. Funding for the transport sector has been increased by an unprecedented 359%, underscoring the government’s commitment to modernizing urban mobility infrastructure.
In a major boost for agriculture, Rs. 8.3 billion has been allocated to promote shrimp farming, signaling a push to diversify Punjab’s agrarian economy and support the growth of the aquaculture sector.
Social welfare programs feature prominently in the budget as well. Rs. 3.5 billion has been allocated for the Minority Card, Rs. 4 billion for the Chief Minister Punjab Himmat Card, and Rs. 40 billion for the Maryam Nawaz Social Security Ration Card, aimed at providing essential support to vulnerable communities.
The landmark Apni Chhat Apna Ghar scheme has received a hefty Rs. 150 billion allocation to facilitate affordable housing for low-income families.
Additionally, the government has approved a 10% increase in salaries for provincial employees and proposed a 5% rise in pensions for retired government workers, providing relief amid rising inflation.
