LHC to hear Pervez Musharraf's plea against high treason case

LAHORE: The Lahore High Court (LHC) is scheduled to hear on Thursday three civil miscellaneous applications moved by convicted former president Pervez Musharraf opposing multiple actions against him, including the high treason case verdict.
Judge Syed Mazahar Ali Akbar Naqvi, Judge Mohammad Ameer Bhatti and Justice Chaudhry Masood Jahangir comprise the full bench seized with the matter.

The LHC registrar’s office returned these applications on Dec 27 last year due to the winter vacation and unavailability of the full bench.
On Wednesday, a legal panel comprising Khwaja Ahmad Tariq Rahim and Azhar Siddique re-submitted the petitions, the three-judge full bench recently formed by LHC Chief Justice Sardar Mohammad Shamim Khan is expected to take up the main petition on Jan 9.
Hearing Gen Musharraf’s key petition as a single bench, Justice Naqvi referred it to a wider bench outlining significant legal problems involved in the matter. Eventually, the bench was later created by the chief justice.
The special court had announced its verdict on Dec 17, handing down the death penalty with a two-to-one majority to Gen Musharraf in the high treason case.

The former president pleaded to postpone the impugned judgment until a decision on the key petition was released and instructions be given to the federal government to deliver the special court’s complete record.
