LAHORE: The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Monday allowed to conduct elections of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman, paving the way for Zaka Ashraf to the coveted post.
During a hearing, Justice Anwaar Hussain heard all arguments and pronounced his decision on the petition for a stay order against the elections. The court then sent the consolidated petitions to Chief Justice of Pakistan Umar Ata Bandial. The court withdrew its injunction on conducting polls.
Last week, the LHC issued a stay order against the election of the chairman after suspending the notification of the Board of Governors (BoG).
The court heard a petition that contended that PCB Chief Election Commissioner Shahzad Farooq Rana had made several changes to the list of the BoG, which was finalized by the interim management committee on June 20.
It alleged that the act of the chief election commissioner was “illegal”. The petition implored the court for a stay order in this regard, which the court granted.
The Peshawar High Court (PHC) and Balochistan High Court (BHC) also issued a stay order on the election of the PCB chairman.
BHC Chief Justice Naeem Akhtar Afghan and Justice Amir Nawaz issued an order to stop the elections till July 17 due to Eid-ul-Azha holidays and two weeks of summer vacations.
The election of PCB chairman was scheduled for June 28 but was postponed after the court’s order. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif nominated Muhammad Zaka Ashraf and Advocate Supreme Court Mustafa Ramday as members of the Board of Governors of the PCB.
The decision came after Najam Sethi resigned as PCB chairman and ruled himself out of the election for the post amid a tussle between the government and the Ministry of Inter-Provincial Coordination.
