KARACHI: Provincial Election Commissioner Aijaz Anwer Chohan has said that the Local Government elections is a massive exercise and that yesterday’s polling largely remained peaceful as no major incident reported anywhere.

Talking to media here on Monday, Aijaz Anwer Chohan referred to various media reports about delay in election results, and clarified that the results were being prepared, and would be announced by this evening.

He said there were 16 districts included for the second phase of LG polls in Sindh, out of which 7 included from Karachi and 9 from Hyderabad, adding that these 16 district include some 3600 Union Committees.
About Karachi, Aijaz Anwer Chohan said some 170 Returning Officers had been appointed for Karachi where in Karachi around 4990 polling stations were set up. Every RO had some 5 to 6 UCs under his jurisdiction, he added.

He said there were 246 Union Committees in the Metropolis and polling time ended at 5pm last evening, however, those who were present in premises of polling stations continued to vote due to which polling at some places ended at 6pm or even 7pm.
The Provincial Election Commissioner of Sindh said that the electoral body dispensed its responsibility constitutionally as it had strict monitoring mechanism.
He said results were being compiled and are expected to be announced this evening.
