Dozens of lawyers in Islamabad entered the ‘red zone’ on Monday as the Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP) convened to select eight new judges for the Supreme Court of Pakistan.
At least four Supreme Court judges, including Justice Mansoor Ali Shah and Justice Munib Akhtar, have called for the Judicial Commission meeting to be postponed until the Supreme Court resolves the matter of the 26th Constitutional Amendment.
Lawyers gathered at various locations in Islamabad, with the Lawyers’ Action Committee staging a protest near D-Chowk. The demonstrators, holding a banner reading “26th Constitutional Amendment unacceptable,” voiced their opposition with slogans and chants of “Azaadi” (freedom) and “Lawyers’ unity zindabad” (long live lawyers’ unity).

Moreover, the lawyers’ representatives convened at the Islamabad District Courts, opposing the 26th Amendment and demanding the cancellation of the JCP meeting.
Last month, the Lahore High Court Bar Association (LHCBA) filed an application with the apex court through Advocate Muhammad Waqar Rana, seeking the postponement of the JCP meeting.
