The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government has successfully completed seven hydropower projects, with twelve more currently in progress, according to Secretary Energy and Power, Muhammad Zubair Khan.
Chairing a high-level review meeting, Secretary Energy emphasized that these projects would significantly contribute to the province’s economic stability and the future growth of its industrial sector.
During the meeting, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Pakhtunkhwa Energy Development Organization (PEDO), Engr Riaz Ahmed Jan, provided an update.
He highlighted that the seven completed hydropower projects are generating a total of 161 megawatts of electricity, resulting in annual earnings exceeding Rs 4 billion.
Work is actively underway on twelve additional energy projects, which include hydro, solar power, and transmission lines. These projects encompass:
- 300 MW Balakot Mansehra
- 157 MW Madyen Swat
- 88 MW Gabral Kalam
- 84 MW Matiltan Swat
- 69 MW Lawi Chitral
- 8 MW Koto Dir
- 8 MW Krora Shangla
- 5 MW Chapri Charkhel Kuram
- 9 MW Mujahideen Power Project Torghar
These projects are expected to generate a combined total of 778 megawatts of electricity, providing the province with an annual income of more than Rs 45 billion.
Moreover, Project Director Solar, Engr Asfandyar, briefed the meeting on the provincial government’s comprehensive plans to transition various infrastructure to solar energy. This initiative includes converting 8,000 schools, 5,762 mosques, 6,650 houses, 187 primary health units, and government buildings, including the Chief Minister Secretariat, to solar power in different districts across the province.
