KARACHI: Tensions escalated in Karachi’s bustling Saddar area on Saturday as local authorities sealed several shops in the iconic Jhanda Gali, sparking strong protests from traders.
The action, led by the Assistant Commissioner of Karachi, targeted alleged illegal hoardings, leaving shopkeepers fuming over what they describe as a sudden and unannounced crackdown.
Shopkeepers in Jhanda Gali, a historic and commercially vibrant street, reported that the sealing operation was conducted early in the morning without prior notice.
Many business owners arrived at their shops only to find them shut, resulting in financial losses estimated in the lakhs of rupees. Traders argue that the lack of warning left them no time to secure their merchandise or prepare for the disruption.
The affected traders have vehemently demanded that the administration review the action, calling for the immediate reopening of their shops.
They emphasize that the sudden enforcement ahead of 14th August celebrations has not only disrupted their livelihoods but also impacted the daily footfall in one of Karachi’s most frequented shopping destinations.
“This is unjust and economically crippling,” said a local shopkeeper, who requested anonymity. “We were given no opportunity to comply or rectify any issues. The authorities must reconsider this move.”
