Karachi is ranked a dismal 918th in the Oxford Economics Global Cities Index, while Islamabad and Lahore hold the 578th and 878th positions, respectively. In a survey of the 1,000 largest urban economies globally, New York and London secured the top two spots.
The Global Cities Index evaluated cities using twenty-seven factors across five categories: economics, human capital, quality of life, environment, and governance.
Mark Britton, Director of City Services at Oxford Economics, said in the report, “Cities are the epicentres of human civilization, where innovation, diversity, and progress converge.
“However, our understanding of what makes a truly successful city is often clouded by the complexity of urban dynamics,” he added.
Islamabad, the highest-ranked city in Pakistan, scored 772 in Quality of Life and 775 in Environment. Karachi, on the other hand, scored poorly in the human capital category, which measures the collective knowledge and skills of a city’s population and underpins its economic potential, with a score of 612. It did somewhat better in governance with 851 points, environment with 917 points, and quality of life with 851 points.
