KARACHI: Pakistan’s largest city, Karachi, has once again been ranked among the least livable cities in the world, slipping to 170th place out of 173 cities in the Economist Intelligence Unit’s (EIU) Global Liveability Index 2025.
The EIU’s annual index evaluates cities worldwide based on over 30 qualitative and quantitative factors grouped under five key categories: stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education, and infrastructure.
Each factor is assessed on a scale ranging from acceptable to intolerable, offering a comprehensive view of the challenges residents face in daily life.
This year’s index ranked Lagos, Nigeria, as the least livable city globally at 173rd, while Vienna, Austria, retained its position as the world’s most livable city for the seventh consecutive year.
Vienna’s consistently high scores across healthcare, infrastructure, and cultural amenities continue to set the standard for urban quality of life.
Karachi’s low ranking reflects persistent issues related to infrastructure, public services, security, and environmental conditions, which continue to affect the quality of life for its residents.
