Karachi: Jamaat-e-Islami chief Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman has called on the government to reduce fuel prices and abolish the petroleum levy, announcing a nationwide protest campaign in response to rising inflation.
In a video statement on the cost-of-living crisis, Hafiz Naeem said the government must lower petroleum prices, warning that otherwise public pressure would be used to compel the authorities to meet the protesters’ demands.
He said demonstrations would be held across the country against rising fuel prices and the increasing cost of living.
According to the Jamaat-e-Islami leader, peaceful protests will take place at 510 locations nationwide, including in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan. He claimed the campaign had received strong public support and urged the authorities not to obstruct demonstrators.
Hafiz Naeem said the party would continue to highlight public grievances through peaceful protest and appealed to young people to participate by bringing their motorcycles and cars to the demonstrations.
Meanwhile, Munem Zafar Khan, Jamaat-e-Islami’s Karachi chief, also announced a programme of protests in the city. He said protest convoys would set off from various locations across Karachi before converging at Mazar-e-Quaid, after which a larger rally would proceed towards Shahrah-e-Faisal.
Munem Zafar Khan said the protests would continue until the petroleum levy is withdrawn and urged the public to take part in the demonstrations in support of their rights.
